Functions of the Federal Aviation Administration began with the formation of the Aeronautics Branch in the Department of Commerce in 1926. The Branch was renamed the Bureau of Air Commerce in 1934. Thereafter, an independent Civil Aeronautics Authority was created in 1938, reformed as the Civil Aeronautics Administration within the Department of Commerce in 1940. The Administration's duties were assumed by the Federal Aviation Agency in 1958. When the U.S. Department of Transportation was established in 1966, the Agency was reorganized as the Federal Aviation Administration within the Department.
The Administration's Eastern Regional Office serves Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
