WICOMICO COUNTY, MARYLAND

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

PUBLIC WORKS

ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

The Department of Public Works oversees five divisions: Building Construction; Engineering; Fire Protection; Roads; and Solid Waste and Recycling (County Charter, sec. 506).

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION DIVISION
Upon review and approval of site and construction plans, the Building Construction Division issues permits for building construction, which include, but are not limited to, residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional structures, as well as remodeling, additions, alterations, mobile homes, accessory buildings, and swimming pools.

FIRE PROTECTION DIVISION
The Fire Protection Division protects the people and property in Wicomico County from the dangers of destructive fire, primarily through fire code enforcement and public fire education. The Division inspects buildings and reviews all building construction plans (except for one- and two-family dwellings) to check compliance with County and municipal fire codes.

ROADS DIVISION
The Roads Division plans, maintains, and constructs all County roads, bridges, and dams. This involves ditch maintenance, roadside grass mowing, tree trimming, crossroad and driveway pipe installations, constructing and resurfacing of roads, snow removal, and sign installation. The Department also runs two automobile ferries that provide a route across the Wicomico River, free of charge: the Upper Ferry, and the Whitehaven Ferry.

SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING DIVISION
The Solid Waste and Recycling Division operates the Newland Park Landfill (northwest of Salisbury), eleven transfer stations for the use of homeowners to dispose of their household garbage and recyclables, and nine recycling convenience drop-off stations.
