The Maryland Commission on Autism was authorized on October 1, 2009 (Chapters 337 & 338, Acts of 2009; Code Health-General Article, secs. 13-2801 through 13-2806). The Commission was charged with advising and making recommendations to the Governor, General Assembly, and relevant State agencies concerning services for persons with autism spectrum disorders, including health care, education, and adolescent and adult issues. Further, the Commission was to develop a comprehensive statewide plan for an integrated system of services, training, and treatment to affected individuals of all ages. Meeting at least once quarterly, the Commission evaluated ways to promote public awareness of autism sprectrum disorders, and reviewed any findings from summits or conferences on the subject convened by the State.
The Commission consisted of twenty-six members. Nineteen were appointed by the Governor, two represented the General Assembly, and five served ex officio. Authorization for the Commission ended September 30, 2012.
