DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

DEFUNCT AGENCIES

MARYLAND VETERANS TRUST FUND
Maryland Veterans Trust Fund was established as of Oct. 1, 2009 (Chapter 742, Acts of 2009). Through Fund, Department received donations, and then made grants and loans to veterans and their families who were in dire financial situations. Grants and loans also were made to private organizations that helped veterans through programs for the homeless or for substance abusers (Code State Government Article, sec. 9-913).

Repealed July 1, 2013 (Chapter 681, Acts of 2013).

MARYLAND VETERANS TRUST FUND REVIEW COMMITTEE
Maryland Veterans Trust Fund Review Committee considered applications for grants and loans from Maryland Veterans Trust Fund, and made recommendations to Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Repealed July 1, 2013 (Chapter 681, Acts of 2013).

WASHINGTON CEMETERY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
When Department of General Services was formed in 1970, Washington Cemetery Board of Trustees was made part of Department. In 1982, Washington Cemetery Board of Trustees transferred from Department of General Services to Maryland Veterans Commission (Chapter 269, Acts of 1982). In June 2006, Board moved under direct supervision of Department of Veterans Affairs (Chapter 238, Acts of 2006).

Board oversaw maintenance of Washington Cemetery at Hagerstown, Maryland, where Confederate dead of battles of Antietam and South Mountain were buried. At Cemetery, 2,468 bodies were interred. Of this number, 346 have been identified.

Cemetery's Board of Trustees was chartered in 1870 (Chapter 213, Acts of 1870). Originally, it was to have had five members: three from Maryland and one each from Virginia and West Virginia. Virginia and West Virginia contributed to cost for funding and maintaining Cemetery initially and so were given a place on Board. In over one hundred and thirty years, however, neither Virginia nor West Virginia appointed a representative.

Board's three Maryland members were appointed to three-year terms by Governor.

Board of Trustees was abolished in Oct. 2010 (Chapter 29, Acts of 2010). Responsibility for supervising Cemetary was assigned to Department of Veterans Affairs.
